Not All Breeders are Equal
The Australian National Kennel Council Limited is the administrative body for pure breed canine affairs in Australia. It does not, however, deal directly with dog exhibitors, breeders or judges. For information pertaining to breeders, clubs or shows, please contact the relevant State or Territory Controlling Body.
DOG BREEDERS versus DOG BREEDERS
The process of buying a pup from an ethical breeder
When you make contact provide the breeder your experience with the breed.
The ethical breeder will establish if your lifestyle and family is a good match for this breed and a good match for a specific individual puppy’s character.
If you pass this test, the breeder may provide you with more information about the litter and parents. Make sure you research the breeder online (you’d be surprised how much you can learn :-) Ask if you can visit (preferrably without children, as it will scew your perception) and ask lots of questions.
Ethical breeders will only allow a visit when pups are about 6-8 weeks. You will get to meet the mother (and sometimes the father too). Observe how the adults behave and where the eat and sleep. The health of the pups and if they happy, plump and curious.
Never rush your decision. Ask if you can get back the next day - so you can sleep it over... If both parties are comfortable, offer to leave a deposit to secure your puppy.
Reputable Breeders promote responsible dog ownership and are passionate about a specific breed.
Puppy Farmers & Back Yard Breeders are in it for your money!
Your job is to work out what kind of breeder you want to deal with. GOOD LUCK!
